How did you learn “life and financial skills”?
I am fifty years old and still struggle all the time trying to figure out how to handle life’s daily challenges and dealing with things like banks, credit card companies, retail stores, health insurance, restaurants, neighbors, coworkers, office politics, etc.
It seems like American society is so complex that I wonder how younger people and folks with lower intelligence figure out how to handle all the complex issues that face us every day.
How did you learn life skills? Was anything taught in school? What help was your parents? How would you teach your kids life skills to prepare them to be adults?
Good question! This does need to be taught in schools because the day I graduated high school I realized I had book knowledge to show for all my hard work but I didn’t know how to navigate thru life. Health insurance, job interviews, car insurance, a banking account, taxes…..all greek to me. Heck I’m 30 and I still can’t figure out my 401k plan. I learned thru trial and error and paying late fees. I got garnished a few times and got some utilities cut off and realized you have to stay on top of it or it bites ya in the behind. And the long arm of the law….they don’t forget about fines.
